🔬 The Science of Urea — Why Proper Application Matters

Understanding how urea works helps you get maximum results and avoid common mistakes that waste fertilizer.

The Nitrogen Conversion Process

Urea doesn't feed plants directly — it must convert through a natural process:

UREA CO(NH₂)₂ Amide Form Urease 2-4 Days AMMONIUM NH₄⁺ Plant Available ✓ Bacteria 1-2 Weeks NITRATE NO₃⁻ Plant Available ✓ Root Uptake 🌱 GROWTH Green-Up! 🌡️ OPTIMAL TEMP 50-85°F Below 50°F = Slow Above 85°F = Loss
💡 Did you know? Some plants prefer nitrogen in the ammonium (NH₄⁺) form — including rice, blueberries, and azaleas — while most vegetables prefer nitrate (NO₃⁻). Urea provides both forms over time, making it versatile for diverse plantings!

Key Insight: The 2-4 day delay before visible results is normal — that's the conversion process at work!

⚠️ Volatilization: Why You Must Water In

Urea left on the soil surface can lose up to 40% of its nitrogen to the atmosphere as ammonia gas.

Surface Application (No Water)
  • NH₃ gas escapes to atmosphere
  • Up to 40% nitrogen lost
  • Worse on hot, windy days
  • Worse on high pH soils (>7.5)
Incorporated (Watered In)
  • Urea moves into soil
  • 95%+ nitrogen delivered
  • Apply 0.5" water within 24-48 hrs
  • Or incorporate mechanically
💡 Pro-Tip — Long-Term Soil pH: Urea is an acid-forming fertilizer. Frequent use may lower soil pH over time. We recommend a soil test every 2-3 years and balancing with agricultural lime to maintain pH 6.0–7.0 for most crops.
⚠️ Safety & Application Guidelines
🚫 NOT FOR FOLIAR USE: This product contains biuret (<1%) which causes leaf burn when applied as a foliar spray. Use ONLY as a soil application. For foliar nitrogen, use a specialty low-biuret urea (<0.25%).

Important Application Guidelines

  • Soil application only — Do not use as foliar spray (biuret causes leaf damage)
  • Incorporate within 24-48 hours — Water in with 0.5" irrigation or till into soil
  • Optimal soil temperature: 50-85°F — Below 50°F conversion is slow; above 85°F volatilization increases
  • Keep 2" away from seeds/transplants — High salt index can burn tender roots
  • Never apply to drought-stressed lawns — Salt can dehydrate grass, causing "brown-out"
  • Avoid frozen or very cold soil — Nitrogen sits idle and is prone to runoff
  • Store in cool, dry place — Moisture causes caking
Features & Quality Guarantee
  • Maximum Nitrogen Content: 46% nitrogen — highest concentration in dry fertilizers
  • Low Biuret Content: Less than 1% biuret — safe for soil application on all crops
  • Fast-Acting Formula: Converts to plant-available forms within 2-4 days
  • Versatile Soil Application: Broadcasting, side dressing, fertigation, incorporation
  • Wide Crop Compatibility: Cereals, vegetables, fruits, lawns, ornamentals
  • Uniform Granular Form: Even distribution and consistent nutrient delivery
  • Cost-Effective: High nitrogen content = less product per application
  • Professional Grade: Manufactured to highest industry standards
⚠️ Not Recommended for Foliar Application: Standard agricultural urea contains biuret (a manufacturing byproduct) that can cause leaf burn and phytotoxicity when applied to foliage. For foliar feeding, use a low-biuret urea specifically labeled for foliar use (<0.25% biuret).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is urea and how does it work?

Urea (46-0-0) is the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertilizer, containing 46% nitrogen. When applied to soil, the enzyme urease converts it to ammonium and then nitrate — forms plants can absorb. This takes 2-4 days under optimal conditions (50-85°F soil temperature, adequate moisture).

How do I prevent nitrogen loss?
  • Incorporate quickly: Water in or till within 24-48 hours
  • Apply before rain: 0.5 inches moves urea into soil
  • Avoid hot/windy days: Volatilization increases above 85°F
  • Consider urease inhibitors: Reduce losses by 40-50%
  • Split applications: Multiple smaller doses are more efficient
When is the best time to apply?
  • Cool-season grasses: Early spring (soil 55°F+) and fall
  • Warm-season grasses: Late spring through summer
  • Vegetables: At planting and during rapid growth
  • Trees: Early spring before bud break

Temperature matters: Below 50°F conversion is very slow. Above 85°F volatilization accelerates. The sweet spot is 50-85°F soil temperature.

Can urea burn plants?

Yes, if misapplied. Urea has a high salt index. Prevention:

  • Never exceed recommended rates
  • Keep 2" away from seeds and transplants
  • Water immediately after application
  • Never apply to drought-stressed plants
  • Split large applications into 2-3 smaller ones
Does urea affect soil pH over time?

Yes. Urea is acid-forming. While initial conversion temporarily raises pH, the subsequent nitrification process lowers it over time.

Recommendation: Test soil every 2-3 years. Balance with agricultural lime to maintain pH 6.0-7.0 for most crops.

Is urea organic?

No. Synthetic urea is not approved for organic production. Organic alternatives include blood meal (12-0-0), feather meal (12-0-0), fish emulsion (5-1-1), composted manure, and alfalfa meal (2.5-0.5-2.5).

Can I use this urea for foliar feeding?

No — this product is not recommended for foliar application.

Standard agricultural urea contains biuret — a byproduct of the manufacturing process. Our urea contains less than 1% biuret, which is normal for agricultural-grade urea and perfectly safe for soil application.

However, when applied to foliage, biuret causes leaf burn and phytotoxicity, especially on sensitive crops like citrus, pineapple, and ornamentals.

For foliar nitrogen: Use a specialty "low-biuret urea" with less than 0.25% biuret content, specifically labeled for foliar use.

Why is my urea clumping or turning into a brick?

Urea is hygroscopic — it actively pulls moisture from the air, causing granules to fuse together.

The fix: Place the bag inside a heavy-duty bag and drop it on a hard surface, or use a rubber mallet. The granules will break apart.

Good news: Clumping does NOT change the nutrient value — only the ease of spreading.

Prevention: Store in a cool, dry location in sealed containers. Keep bags off concrete floors.

Can I mix urea with other fertilizers?

Some mixtures work, others cause problems:

  • ✅ Safe to mix: Potassium Sulfate (0-0-53), MKP (0-52-34), Potassium Chloride
  • 🚫 Avoid: Superphosphate (releases moisture, turns soupy), Ammonium Nitrate (extreme clumping), Calcium Nitrate (forms precipitate)

Important: Never mix urea with superphosphate — the chemical reaction creates an unusable mess in your spreader.

Is urea safe for pets and children?

Once properly watered in, treated areas are generally safe.

  • During application: Keep pets and children away
  • After watering (0.5" water): Once granules dissolve and lawn dries, safe to return
  • Storage: Keep bags secured away from children and pets
